- The mechanics of deterioration of physical infrastructure and in particular the corrosion of structural steel in marine environments involves chemical and physical processes. Increasingly it is evident that microbiological effects and processes also are involved. Both early and longer-term corrosion haven been intimately linked to microbiological influences. Some new research findings are presented for the corrosion of mild steel samples exposed for up to 2.5 years to natural seawater and also for similar samples exposed to the same seawater that had been sterilised to destroy all living material including bacteria. The patterns of weight loss and of maximum pitting are compared. The results can be interpreted as demonstrating competition between biotic and abiotic corrosion processes. The results have direct implications for the development of tools to predict the expected life of physical infrastructure exposed to marine environments as well as for the future development of protective measures.
